When Jake and Dorothy Roach opened their café in June, 1948, Harry Truman was president, and the latest inventions were the polaroid camera and the transistor radio. 1948 also brought in Porsche and NASCAR. But here in Stephenville, we believe the most noteworthy invention in 1948 was the waffle fry. If you have not experienced the delicious crisp, fried potato greatness that is a Jake & Dorothy’s waffle fry, then you are really missing out. Then there is the whole chicken fried steak thing. Served on top of a bed of cream gravy, these are hands down, the best chicken fried steaks you will ever eat in your entire life. Ever.
Even after 70 years, Jake and Dorothy’s still serves up consistent, delicious food made from scratch. Family owned and operated by Jake and Dorothy’s own daughter, Kerry Jane Roach, the café is a love letter to simpler times. Featured on The Daytripper,Texas Country Reporter, and named among Texas Monthly’s 40 Best Small Town Cafes, Jake and Dorothy’s is truly a “time capsule” of the past. In fact, Texas Monthlyeven put the popular café on their cover!
