Why Moola?
Well, why not? This dairy industry diva has stood in tribute to the local dairy industry at the center of the Erath County seat for over 45 years. At one time, Erath County was a major milk producer at the state and national level, and we are sure proud of our agricultural heritage. She stands in solidarity with the values instilled in our youth through FFA, 4-H and our local and county livestock associations. Moola has earned a mention from the Smithsonian Institute, and featured in many magazines and on the web as an ever popular roadside attraction. A quick internet search will tell you, she is more famous than you will ever be. Cowabunga!
Joyce and Tom Whitis erected the fiberglass beloved bovine on September 23, 1972 in reverence to the industry which has served as the bread and butter for many local families. Like those, my family is in the dairy business as well. “Smells like money,” my uncle Bob would always say when we rode with him to look at the cows. Moola represents the pioneering spirit of our hardworking dairy farmers, many of whom are second, third and fourth generation. In my case, my cousin is actually fifth generation and I am quite proud of her, for carrying on our family’s legacy since 1887.
So next time you are Stephenville, give our holy cow a shout out #Moola!
